Press to add some music to the show

Bulbbul is a supernatural period drama set in the Bengal Presidency era, during the 1880's. Veera Kapur - the costume designer, shares her experience of designing costumes for a period piece.

The in-depth character sketching, and its semblance with era-appropriate clothing- the culmination of both is of paramount importance in the narrative of period films.

A demure child bride, who is banished from her cocoon of innocence, and thrown into the deep wells of a burdening patriarchy. Bulbbul comes into a palatial home, unaware of the atrocities that lie behind the high walls. Shy and compromising, her character is replete with a childlike nature - until, the overbearing male domination took over and her life is snatched away from her
Bulbbul was an ever smiling, carefree girl with a perpetual beatific smile on her face.
But being wronged in a society that does not let their women breathe freely, leads to a tragic turn of events in Bulbbul's life. In this folklore, Bulbbul changes into a woman whose coy smile is now transformed into a wicked grin.

When Satya comes back to his village after years, his character sees a major transformation. He is now a respectable aristocrat and his costuming depicts that kind of a narrative and character change, distinctly. Satya's need to be listened to because he is the only male member of the family present at that point, is strongly portrayed.
Satya was Bulbbul's soulmate of sorts. Bulbbul gets married to a man double her age. Her husband's brother - Satya is who she bonds with, as she finds the feeling of home in his presence. Satya's character sees an interlacing of benevolence , loyalty and amicability, until his elder brother and Bulbbul's husband sends him away to abroad for higher studies.

The death of her husband by the witch in the village, leads to a major transformation in her costuming. She is now a widow and is only see in white drapes that symbolizes her plight. An individual who has been burdened by the male dominance and suffocated in its clutches
Binodini's character was perhaps the most wronged one. She is docile and timid and has the load of unexpressed emotions. She has adapted to the male dominated society and has trained herself in accordance to the norms laid out by that clan.
She represents a character who has been victimized for too long. She does not have the strength to fight back or stand up for herself. Behind the gorgeous sarees and heavy jewellery - she has hidden her traumatic experiences, unfulfilled desires.
