Plaided tartan skirts trend inspired from the 90's as seen in the period show - Outlander
One of the most discussed period shows that has been ongoing for 6 years now – Outlander is a masterpiece of a timeless period show that shows two different time periods. The specific details of its costumes and characterization has been discussed at length in the article Outlander - Dressed in Time.

Out of the various costumes seen in the show – some were from the 70’s, while some from the 90’s – most of which were era-appropriate, while some were more character specific. The plaid tartan skirt is one of the clothing pieces that was a huge trend back in the 90’s and it made sense to use it as a costume in the given era. The character named Brianna is often seen wearing plaid tartan skirts in the show. Taking inspiration from her character – Priyanka Nazareth, a final year Fashion communication student, aged 24 and also a fashion influencer decided to curate a look by using a plaid skirt.

On asking her about what is it that she likes about the plaid skirt trend, she shared, “I believe it was incredibly modern back in those times. It instantly elevated the look. It really interested me how you see Brianna’s character being represented through her costumes – she was a modern girl, a maverick and fearless. Wearing those short plaid skirts were not only character appropriate but also era appropriate because it was indeed a fashion trend at that time.”

Plaid skirts were worn by women back in the 1940’s – midi skirts, short skirts, co- ords sets – these were a rage back then.

She wore an indigo blue polo t-shirt and paired it up with a green and blue plaided tartan mini-skirt. She wore a pair of black socks and white sneakers to round off her sports outfit.

On asking her to elaborate why she went for such a unique theme, she concluded by saying, “We actually had these plaided skirts back in school for our sports days and classes. I was into a lot of sports so I used to wear them and luckily I have one in my wardrobe even today where I can pair it up with a simple cotton t-shirt and have a really uncomplicated and fun casual look created. The school girl theme brought back a lot of memories as it just tells me how years later – we are still wearing it and using it – just that the styling has evolved, now we get to experiment with a lot of layering and matching different garments.”
