Caught In A Corset

Using  different clothes to create a corset like look

Corsets seem to be becoming one of the must-have wardrobe essentials and millennials sure seem to be enjoying the trend. Throwback to a time when corsets were only used to shrink the waist size and set unrealistic beauty standards – it was one of the most uncomfortable vintage pieces of clothing ever seen mostly during the Victorian era. The latest show Bridgerton has made it even more popular, to know more about the costumes seen in that show, you can read the article Bridgerton Bridgade.

Probably why today period shows always have the use of corsets when they are representing the eras in which it was popular. However, cut to the contemporary mix – this vintage clothing has seen a massive evolution in terms of styling and it has become more of a trendy garment, that you style your outfit with, rather than having it serve a purpose of cinched waistlines and a desired body shape.

Janice George, a final year fashion communication student, aged 23, seems to have been charmed by the return of this trend. On asking her about what really intrigues her about them, she shared, “What intrigued me is how the perception towards corsets have changed. Now it is no more about fitting into the beauty standards of the society. Times have changed and so have the use of this classic attire. The various styles that can be made and especially how I can get creative with whatever I have in the wardrobe, and try to curate a corset look is what got me excited for this styling challenge.”

She tapped onto her creative side, as she decoded her get-up which she styled by incorporating a corset silhouette. In this look –  she is seen wearing a white tank top  over which she wore an inverted  black cardigan and tied it around her waist – the manner in which the cardigan looked as she tied it around her waist totally gave the illusion of an off shoulder corset top. She layered it with an oversized blazer and then rounded it off by pairing it with a pair of straight cut pants.

On asking her to share her views on how effortlessly she feels this trend has glided into modern fashion, she concluded by saying, “I think it is quite innovative how a certain style that had its inception years ago has made its way back to our trends section. I have seen so many styles popping up on social media. From dresses to tops to gowns to even ethnic looks – anything and everything can be curated by incorporating this new corset trend. It is quite fascinating to see how fashion evolves as it is constantly striving to fit into contemporary styling.”
