Saree Not Sorry

Taking inspiration from the traditional Maharashtrian sarees worn by Priyanka Chopra for her role as Kashibai in Bajirao Mastani and creating a modern saree look

Sarees are the most elegant traditional wear that you will never get tired of. Probably the reason why our generation hardly has occasions to wear a saree to, at all times. Hence, when we do get a chance at our friend’s marriage or a festival – we go all out with how we curate the perfect ethnic look.  Over the years there has been a plethora of styling done with sarees – we have sharara sarees, lehenga sarees, and pant sarees to name a few.

Ragini Prabhu – a marketing professional and a fashion influencer, aged 23, was extremely excited to take inspiration from one of the period films listed for the challenge and give an interesting twist to her saree.  She chose Bajirao Mastani, and as an ardent lover of wearing sarees – she was floored by all the traditional Maharashtrian sarees that Priyanka Chopra had worn in this magnum opus for her character Kashibai who was the Peshwa’s wife.

On asking her to share what interested her to take part in the styling challenge, she shared, “I think it is a very interesting concept to pick up a certain clothing element from a period film or show and have fun as you style it in your own way. People often think sarees are too hard to manage and cannot be made to look fashionable or a lot different than the usual style of draping it. But, that is the kind of challenge which makes it so interesting. Priyanka looked gorgeous in those traditional Maharashtrian drapes. The bold colours and prints suited her character so well and it was also era-appropriate. Luckily I love colours and I have a few Benarasi dupattas the prints of which resemble the sarees seen on Priyanka.”

The Benarasi dupatta had similar kinds of prints seen in the traditional sarees worn by Priyanka in Bajirao Mastani

Decoding her look, Ragini is seen wearing a bright pink and orange jumpsuit, she went creative as she took an orange and red Benarasi printed dupatta and draped it around her to create a pant-saree outfit. She even wore a dainty round ring around her nose as she didn’t want to exactly wear the Nathani that was seen in the film. As minimalism seems to be a hot topic in the fashion circuit, she tried to put together a get- up that was well balanced. The glaring colours make sense as Priyanka also wore a lot of bright reds, oranges, pinks and purples in the film which the Marathi women used to wear back in the 18th century and still do.

“I don’t have a traditional Maharashtrian saree exactly, but I have all these dupattas in those vivid colours I saw in the film. The prints of these dupatta also give the vibe of the traditional ensembles seen in the film. I thought coming up with a pant-saree idea as I take inspiration from this period film was quite interesting. I wore the Nathani to give it that little Marathi touch“, she concluded.
